About Torrox

Location

Torrox Pueblo is a traditional whitewashed village located in the comarca of Axarquía in the province of Málaga, Andalusia, Spain. Part of the Costa Del Sol, the village sits at the foot of the Sierra de Almijara mountains and is just 4km from the Mediterranean coast.

Access to Torrox is very easy and it is just a short 40-minute drive from Málaga airport.

Torrox consists of four main areas: Torrox Pueblo, Torrox Costa, Torrox Park and El Morche.

The Pueblo is very traditional and you can lose yourself in the maze of small streets and alleyways. The pueblo is a working town with many excellent bars and restaurants. With whitewashed buildings and flowers everywhere, its Arabic origins are clear to see.

Just a short drive or bus (or walk if you fancy) and you are on the Mediterranean Coast. Torrox Costa has something for everyone. Beautiful blue-flag beaches and a long promenade that has an abundance of bars, restaurants and chiringuitos. Make sure you see the stunning sunset as you sip on a beer or wine.

El Morche is a 5-minute drive from Torrox Costa. The beach is a lot quieter and there are none of the apartment block buildings that you find at the Costa.

Torrox Park is more residential, but keep in mind that the El Pino Campsite is located here and it has an excellent pool that you can pay by the day to use.

History

The Pueblo is full of history. It was a very prosperous town during the Moorish occupation and was instrumental in the silk trade that ran between Moorish Granada and Eastern cities such as Baghdad and Damascus.

The Romans also settled in Torrox, naming it Faro or Punta de Torero. If you go to the viewpoint at Torrox Costa (next to the lighthouse – or Faro) you can see the Roman ruins through the glass beneath your feet.
