Places to visit nearby
There are many places to visit using Torrox as your base.
Nerja – Just a 10-minute drive and you are in the beautiful seaside resort of Nerja. Make sure you visit the Balcon de Europa (the Balcony of Europe) for its beautiful views of the Mediterranean. We highly recommend the tapas bar La Piqueta nearby (Calle Pintada).
Frigiliana – Another of the “Pueblos Blancos” in this area is Frigiliana. A 12-minute drive away, it’s a beautiful village with lots of bars and restaurants. The village also has an excellent outdoor pool that overlooks the mountains and sea. It is very cheap and is highly recommended. Cómpeta – Another Moorish whitewashed village. Just 15 minutes away from Torrox.

Málaga – We love Málaga city and it is a shame that it is often overlooked. It is possible to get a very cheap bus (https://www.alsa.com/en/web/bus/home) or to drive there in around 30 minutes. We parked near the port at Parking Muelle Uno. It was roughly 12 Euros for the day.
The Picasso Museum is a must, as is a walk up the Castillo de Gilbalfaro for amazing views over the city. Try to visit the renowned tapas bars El Pimpi and El Refectorium (a tapas bar Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon visit in The Trip to Spain) if you can.
Granada – The historical city of Granada is just over an hour away, where you can visit the Alhambra Palace (book tickets online in advance!). The bohemian area of Albaicin is also worth a visit, with its narrow-cobbled streets full of bars and restaurants. You also get a fantastic view of the Alhambra from the Plaza San Nicolás.
The city as a whole is amazing, so it is worth spending more than a day if you have the time.

Seville – Roughly 2 ½ hours’ drive away is the beautiful city of Seville. The capital of Andalusia, it lies on the banks of the Guadalquivir River and is one of the most historical cities in Spain.
There are countless historical sites to see and literally thousands of tapas bars to choose from. Again, may be worth spending more than one day here if you can.

Córdoba – The historical city of Códoba is a 2 hour drive away. Similar but smaller than Seville, make sure you visit “La Juderia” (The Jewish quarter) which is a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets, flower-filled courtyards and picturesque plazas. Again, packed full of traditional tapas bars, we can’t recommend this area enough.

Ronda – Less than 2 hours away is the mountaintop village of Ronda. Famous for its dramatic escarpments, breath-taking views and the El Tajo gorge, it is a popular attraction for tourists, particularly in the summer months. The 18th century Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) attracts most tourists, as it towers 120 metres above the canyon floor.
Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles were both captivated by Ronda and wrote fondly about their experiences of staying in the village (in fact, Welles’ ashes are buried there!).

Skiing
Believe it or not, it is possible to ski in the Sierra Nevada mountains that are just over an hour away. We haven’t done it yet, but plan to in the future! https://www.andalucia.org/en/sports/sports/skiing-and-snowboarding/
